The Dangerous Myth of The Focal Infection Theory in Dentistry
April 16, 2025Key Takeaways:
- After a root canal saved me from the most intense pain I’ve had in my entire life, I became dedicated to educating others about the many advantages of root canals. Despite the bad rap they get from misinformation being spread across the media, root canals actually relieve pain—NOT cause it! During a root canal, we remove all the infected tissue that is the culprit of your pain.
- Your teeth are irreplaceable, and you only get one set of them, so you should make it a priority to save your natural teeth! Instead of jumping right to extraction (which can lead to teeth misalignment), opt for a root canal. That way, we can clean out the infection while preserving the structure of your tooth!
- The benefits of root canals go far beyond your teeth! They also save you money in the long run, because you avoid the extra ongoing costs that come with extraction. Not only that, but by treating an infected tooth with a root canal, you decrease your risk of serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections.
My mission in life is to save teeth. After months of dealing with the most excruciating tooth pain I’ve ever experienced when I was a teenager, a kind endodontist not only saved me from my suffering but also managed to prevent the loss of my tooth. The procedure that healed me? A root canal!
If you hear the words “root canal” and immediately think of pain, you’re not alone. Root canals have gotten a bad rap—especially in recent years—thanks to sensationalism and the spread of misinformation. But the truth is, root canal treatment is one of the best ways to relieve dental pain, not cause it! It’s a procedure designed to save your natural tooth, eliminate infection, and restore your oral health.
That’s why today, I want to share the various advantages of root canals for your dental and overall health, why I strongly believe their tooth-saving power, and how educating yourself on root canals and endodontics in general can help you get better outcomes the next time you end up in the dentist’s office!
The Impact of Root Canals on My Own Life
I often joke that before becoming a dentist, I was the ultimate dental patient. I say that because I was actually born missing eight of my teeth! As you can imagine, that meant that I spent plenty of time in the dental chair before I was even old enough to drive.
But it wasn’t until after high school that I faced my biggest challenge. After undergoing multiple procedures to ensure I had a full set of teeth before starting college, I thought I was finally in the clear. Unfortunately, though, it was at that point that I began experiencing excruciating pain on the lower left side of my mouth, accompanied by relentless headaches.
I saw doctor after doctor until, eventually, it was recommended that I have a tooth pulled. The dentist who recommended it thought that was the only way to fix my problem. But after the extraction, the pain didn’t go away. In fact, it turned out that I had been misdiagnosed altogether and lost a perfectly healthy tooth! After all the procedures, money spent, and months of suffering, I was right back where I started.
It wasn’t until I was referred to a kind and supportive endodontist that everything changed. He didn’t just relieve my pain—he listened to me, he empowered me, and he transformed my life by doing just one treatment: a root canal!
That experience was the turning point that led me to my true calling, which is to educate the world on the various advantages of root canals.
The Many Advantages of Root Canal Treatment
Not only is it a valid treatment option, but choosing to save your tooth through a root canal can be one of the best decisions for your long-term health and well-being. Let’s talk about just how many benefits of root canal treatment there are so you can be fully informed the next time you’re faced with the choice between a root canal and tooth extraction.
1. Saves Your Natural Tooth
Your natural teeth are priceless. No artificial replacement—no matter how advanced—can fully replicate the function and strength of a real tooth. When a tooth is infected, a root canal allows us to clean out the infection while preserving the structure of your tooth.
If you opt for extraction instead, the surrounding teeth may shift, leading to bite misalignment, difficulty chewing, and even jawbone deterioration. That’s why saving your natural tooth is always the best option when possible!
2. Relieves Pain—NOT Causes It!
Let’s clear up one of the biggest root canal myths out there: They do NOT cause pain—they relieve it!
If you have an infected tooth, you’re likely experiencing discomfort, swelling, or sensitivity. These symptoms are caused by the infection inside the tooth. During a root canal, we remove the infected tissue, clean the inside of the tooth, and seal it to prevent further issues. With modern anesthetics and techniques, most of my patients experience little to no discomfort during the procedure—often feeling immediate relief from their original pain!
3. Stops the Spread of Infection
A tooth infection isn’t something to ignore—it can spread beyond the tooth and affect surrounding gums, bone, and even other areas of the body. If left untreated, an infected tooth can lead to serious complications, including abscesses, systemic infections, and even increased risks for certain health conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
Fortunately, one of the advantages of a root canal is that it removes the infection at its source, stopping its spread and protecting the rest of your body from unnecessary harm.
4. Maintains Your Natural Smile and Facial Structure
Did you know that losing a tooth can cause bone loss in the jaw? This is because the roots of your teeth give the jawbone purpose, keeping it strong. When a tooth is removed, the surrounding bone begins to shrink, leading to changes in your facial structure—sometimes making people appear older than they are.
On the other hand, a root canal helps you preserve your tooth, maintain your natural smile, and prevent premature aging caused by missing teeth.
5. Supports Your Overall Health
Your oral health and overall health are deeply connected. Studies have shown links between periodontal disease (or inflammation of the gums) and serious health conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. By treating an infected tooth with a root canal, you’re not just protecting your smile—you’re also reducing the risk of other health complications that could impact your well-being in the long run.
6. Saves You Money
While you may hesitate at the cost of a root canal, saving your tooth is actually more cost-effective in the long run, which is one of the best advantages of root canal treatment.
If you have a tooth extracted, you may need a bridge, dental implant, or other restoration to fill the gap—each of which can be expensive and require ongoing maintenance. A root canal, followed by a strong restoration (like a crown), allows you to keep your natural tooth without the added costs of tooth replacement options.
7. Easy to Complete
Think a root canal takes forever? Think again! Most root canals can be completed in just one visit, sometimes two. After your procedure, we restore the tooth with a filling or crown, and you’re good to go. Many of my patients are surprised by how simple and straightforward the process is compared to what they imagined.
8. Provides Highly-Successful, Long-Term Results
When done correctly, root canals have a very high success rate, with many treated teeth lasting a lifetime. The key is to make sure you see a provider who is confident doing them, performs them on a regular basis, and uses modern technology that improves the quality and comfort of the procedure.
To ensure long-term success, it’s important to follow up with a durable restoration—such as a crown—to protect the tooth and prevent future issues. With good oral hygiene and regular check-ups, your treated tooth can stay strong for years to come.
9. Encourages Natural Healing
Your body has an amazing ability to heal itself, and a root canal gives your tooth the best chance at recovery. By removing the infection and sealing the tooth, the body can begin its natural healing process—allowing your tooth to stay a functional and healthy part of your mouth.
Empowered Patient = Healthier You!
I strongly believe that the more educated and empowered you are as a patient, the better you’re able to advocate for the care that’s right for you—leading to a healthier, happier life! By understanding what root canals are, the advantages root canal treatment provides you, and why you might choose to have a root canal rather than an extraction, you’ll be well equipped to make a decision that supports your overall health and happiness the next time you run into tooth pain.
