What Burnout Really Looks Like in Dentistry with Dr. Jessica Metcalf

In this soul-stirring episode of University of Why, I sat down with my dear friend and fellow dental powerhouse, Dr. Jessica Metcalfe, to talk about something that way too many of us face—but not enough of us actually talk about: burnout in dentistry.
Jessica’s story is a powerful one. She’s worn many hats—musician, entrepreneur, cancer care dentist, corporate leader, practice owner, coach—and she’s come full circle after hitting her own personal burnout rock bottom.
What she shares here isn’t just fluff. It’s science, soul, and strategy wrapped into one powerful conversation. From different types of burnout (yup, there’s more than one) to what it really takes to heal, this episode is your permission slip to slow down and feel again.
Whether you’re a dentist, a mom, a leader, or a woman simply trying to hold it all together, this episode will crack you open—in the best way.
From Rock Camp to Root Canals
If you think your career path’s been winding, wait until you hear Jessica’s.
She went from running a rock camp for kids to selling Nestlé ice cream to managing cancer patients’ oral health to owning two practices and coaching high-achieving professionals out of burnout. And through all of it, she kept chasing one thing: alignment.
And spoiler: it took breaking down first.
Burnout Doesn’t Always Look Like You Think
When Jessica first sat in on her mom’s psychiatric appointment—exhausted, overworked, and trying to “hold it all together”—the psychiatrist turned to her and said:
“Are you okay?”
She wasn’t.
That question cracked her open. And what followed was years of healing from high-functioning anxiety and burnout.
As we discuss in the episode, true burnout recovery takes 1 to 5 years. Why? Because everything that got you there has to be unraveled.
And unraveling? That’s uncomfortable.
But it’s also where your real power lies.
The 7+ Types of Burnout Nobody Talks About
You’ve probably heard of “workplace burnout.” But did you know there’s:
- Parental burnout
- Relational burnout
- Caregiver burnout
- Neglect burnout
- Under-stimulated (underwhelmed) burnout
- Overworked burnout
- Boredom-based burnout
They’re all real. They all show up differently.
And if you’re a high-achieving dental professional? You’ve probably danced with most of them at some point.
Jessica helps you recognize these patterns and—more importantly—how to break free.

So, What Actually Works?
We both agreed on this: Healing isn’t a checklist.
It’s not:
- Meditate
- Do yoga
- Journal
- Problem solved.
Instead, it’s this question:
“What do I need right now?”
For some, it’s a breath.
For others, it’s boundaries.
For Jessica? It was relocating to the West Coast, getting a dog, and hiking mountains.
You’ve got to run your own experiments. Become your own scientist. And—yes—feel your feelings.
(Crying is productive, y’all. It releases cortisol. 🙌🏽)
