For Patients: Pain in an Old Root Canal? Don’t Panic and Consider a Retreatment!
January 19, 2024I want to introduce you to Dr. Robert Schlossberg, who shares a truly special dental practice with his wife, Dr. Deb Klotz. They are both experienced dentists with a 21-year-old practice in Bethesda, Maryland, where they specialize in serving high-fear patients requiring IV sedation. Because of the caring bedside manner and clinical excellence their patients require, Dr. Schlossberg and Dr. Klotz wanted to up their endo game. They decided to go deep with two endodontic training programs I offer, E-School with Coaching and E-School LIVE.
Embarking on the Endodontic CE Path
Want to know a secret? I knew both Dr. Klotz and Dr. Schlossberg from dental school! They were dating all those years ago. I go waaaaaaaaaay back with these two!

Before they jumped into the world of E-School, they had taken various endo CE programs, both local to them and as far away as California. Their goal was to offer their patients superior root canal treatments, ensuring not only comfort during the procedure but also long-term success. And that meant they wanted to go deeper.
Their connection with me from our time at dental school was probably what made them consider E-School, but the decision to research my programs and enroll was all theirs.
They started with E-School with Coaching, which is a prerequisite for LIVE. Coaching comes with a detailed curriculum of 6 modules + 2 bonus modules, and 8 weeks of coaching calls, where dentists can get personalized feedback on their questions and cases (plus more inclusions you can read about here). The goal of E-School is to teach dentists my best tips and techniques, and provide them with a deeper understanding of endodontics, so they can reduce their chair time, improve their profits, and enhance their outcomes.
Dr. Schlossberg felt that E-School’s online curriculum laid a solid foundation for him and filled in some gaps in his knowledge base. He was ready to go to the next stage of his endo CE journey: E-School LIVE, my 4-day, live patient, hands-on endodontic training program.
E-School LIVE: Getting an Assistant’s Perspective as a Dentist
At first, Dr. Schlossberg and Dr. Klotz wanted to attend E-School LIVE together. This way, they could both perform up to four root canals on live patients, with me there to guide them.
But I suggested another idea: Come twice. The first time, Dr. Klotz would act as the dentist, and Dr. Schlossberg would step into the role of her “assistant.” The second time, they’d swap places.
I want dentists to come to LIVE with their assistant so they can become an endo dream team when they return to the office. But because this husband-and-wife duo shared a practice, they had a unique opportunity to each attend twice, so the principles would really sink in.
Dr. Schlossberg was initially hesitant about the extended timeline required for this approach, which I totally get. But I’m glad to say he soon recognized how valuable it is. When you experience something twice, from two different vantage points, you’re able to approach the second time with a whole new set of experiences and questions—not to mention a lot more confidence.
Plus, Dr. Schlossberg and Dr. Klotz were able to return to their practice with simplification and streamlined workflows for their assistants, to make their jobs easier.
The Impact of My One-of-a-Kind Endodontic Training Programs on Their Practice
Dr. Schlossberg let me know that he’s already seen significant changes in his practice since incorporating E-School principles. And he hasn’t even attended E-School LIVE as a dentist yet! The best benefits have been:
- Efficiency: He and Dr. Klotz are able to complete root canal procedures more swiftly and confidently, reducing chair time and paving the way to higher profits .
- Patient Comfort: Patients experience increased post-procedure comfort, alleviating anxiety.
- Predictable Outcomes: Dr. Schlossberg and Dr. Klotz are achieving higher rates of long-term success with root canals.
- More Teeth Saved: They’re saving more teeth than ever, which benefits patients and reinforces the two doctors’ commitment to quality care.
Dr. Schlossberg also told me that having a better understanding of warm vertical condensation and other specialized tools that we worked with in E-School LIVE has truly enhanced their overall endodontic workflow.
Now that he’s had an experience in E-School LIVE as an assistant under his belt, he’ll return in the role of a dentist soon, so he can keep honing his skills. He’s excited to deepen his diagnostic abilities and tackle even more complex cases.
Dr. Schlossberg’s journey through E-School (so far, with more fun to come!) underscores the transformative impact of comprehensive endodontics continuing education. He called E-School LIVE “a big deal” for the dental community (which I totally love and agree with) that offers a level of nuance generally lacking in dental school.
Look, dental school has a lot of curriculum to get through, and endo can get the short end of the stick. That’s why it’s important for general dentists to invest their time and energy in endodontic training programs like E-School after they graduate.
If you’re ready to shore up your endodontic knowledge, I hope you’ll check out E-School so you can empower yourself with the tools and confidence you need to save more teeth, one root canal at a time.
