From Dentistry to Alignment: Why Dr. Avi Patel Walked Away from the Operatory

In this powerful episode of University of Why, I sit down with my friend and fellow dental entrepreneur, Dr. Avi Patel, who opens up about his journey from burnt-out associate dentist to mission-driven educator. If you’ve ever felt the pull to do something more—but fear held you back—this one is for you.
Dr. Avi built his career with 3 goals in mind: time, money, and fulfillment. But as you’ll hear in this candid conversation, the path to alignment wasn’t as smooth as he’d envisioned. Together, we unpack the reality behind dentistry’s shiny surface, the signs of misalignment, and how following your internal compass can lead to a career (and life) that truly lights you up.
But Avi’s story didn’t start with burnout, it started with big dreams. And like so many of us, those dreams evolved
From NBA Dreams to DDS
Believe it or not, Avi’s original dream was to become a professional basketball player. But when reality set in, he leaned into another option championed by many first-gen kids: medicine, law, engineering… or dentistry.
What ultimately drew him in? A summer spent shadowing his uncle, a dentist who had the kind of life Avi wanted: control over his time, a fulfilling career helping people, and the means to live well. It was the perfect trifecta—on paper.
But what happens when you finally arrive… and it doesn’t feel the way you thought it would?
The Disconnect: Where’s the Dream Life I Signed Up For?
Out of dental school, Avi hit the ground running. Six days a week, multiple practices, and not a whole lot of joy. He was deep in debt, emotionally drained, and questioning everything.

If you’ve been there, you’re not alone. The truth is, many of us went into dentistry for the promise of balance—but that balance doesn’t come pre-packaged. You have to build it.
And to build it? You have to first realize you’re out of alignment.
Once Avi realized that, he didn’t make a dramatic exit. Instead, he got curious.
The Power of Following the Pull
Avi didn’t abandon dentistry right away. First, he started testing. Dabbling in clear aligners, investing in himself, trying new procedures, looking for that spark.
And when he found it? That inner pull got LOUD.
He described the moment he knew he needed to pivot: The Sunday Scaries returned, even though he was only practicing two days a week. It was a sign he couldn’t ignore. His body was giving him feedback.
That’s when he decided to go all-in on his online course, helping other dentists integrate clear aligners into their practice.
“When you’re pulled toward something bigger, you owe it to yourself to listen.”
As we chatted, Avi shared how scary it was to leave clinical dentistry, but also how right it felt. Even his parents—who, let’s be real, are usually the first to question a nontraditional path—could see he was in alignment.
Because fulfillment is magnetic. And when you’re living your truth, the people around you can’t help but notice.
But even when you’re aligned, self-doubt doesn’t just disappear. Next came the challenge of putting himself out there.
Building a Brand, Embracing Messy Action
We talked about imposter syndrome (hello, old friend), taking messy action, and the surprising joy of posting cringey early videos online.
Avi’s approach to building his personal brand was simple: Just. Be. You.
He committed to showing up daily; even if it meant he was in a bathrobe, at 5am, with no fancy filters on. And through that consistency, he built a community and discovered a deeper purpose.
One of my favorite moments? When he said:

Yes. Yes. YES.
That authenticity became his superpower. And with each step, the universe responded.
When You Start, the Universe Meets You
Avi’s story is a reminder that action breeds clarity. He didn’t have it all figured out at the start. He just followed the breadcrumbs.
Each step, from Uber Eats delivery driver during the pandemic to clear aligner educator, was a lesson. And each lesson helped him come home to himself.
So if you’re sitting in discomfort right now, wondering why your dream career doesn’t feel dreamy, know that it’s okay to question. In fact, it’s necessary.
Because the only way out is through. And sometimes, the only way to grow… is to go.
