How to Overcome Burnout and Find Your Purpose
“My burnout was my awakening. It was the slap in the face I needed to realize that I could change everything—if I started with myself.”
Listen, life isn’t about just checking off to-do lists. It’s about understanding why you’re doing what you do. Today, I want to share my own journey, from the burnout that nearly broke me, to the meaningful recovery that changed my life. The strategies I uncovered are the same ones that can help you, too.
I’m Dr. Sonia Chopra—board-certified endodontist, educator, business owner, mom of three, and wife. My path to fulfillment wasn’t linear. In fact, it was a messy one! But when I look back, the lessons I learned while overcoming burnout are the same ones that completely changed the direction of my life.

Recognizing Burnout: The First Step to Recovery
If you looked at me in 2016, you’d think I had it made: I had a thriving dental practice, three beautiful children, a loving family and a beautiful marriage. But on the inside? I was a wreck. I felt disconnected, overwhelmed, and completely out of sync with myself. I wasn’t even sure who I was anymore. This disconnect between external success and inner emptiness was the wake-up call I needed to realize something was wrong.
The breaking point was when I found myself lying on the floor, crying, feeling completely hollow despite having everything I’d worked for. That moment of crisis? It was my turning point. That’s when I started to heal.
Five Key Strategies That Helped Me Overcome Burnout
Burnout was one of my greatest teachers. Through it, and my subsequent healing journey, I learned strategies that not only helped me recover, but actually transformed my entire life:
- Create Space for Reflection – I made sure to carve out time each day for silence. Whether that meant sitting in my car or going for a walk, this time alone to think and reflect was essential to my healing process.
- Identify the Root Causes – I took a hard look at myself and realized: I was the common denominator in all of my struggles. Instead of blaming external factors, I started identifying my own patterns and beliefs.
- Invest in Personal Growth – I committed to my own development. I devoured books, got curious about frameworks like Enneagram and Human Design, and chose personal growth seminars (like Mindvalley) over dental conferences.
- Reconnect with Your Purpose – This was pivotal, I discovered my passion for teaching. What began as local workshops evolved into a meaningful second career that aligned with my values.
- Restructure Your Work Life – I launched E-School and shifted from a full-time practice to just five days a month without sacrificing revenue. This wasn’t just a career change—it was a mindset shift.
These strategies weren’t just about adjusting my career to combat the burnout, they were a complete overhaul of how I approached life.

The Background: How I Reached Burnout
I grew up as the child of Indian immigrants in America. It was a constant balancing act between two cultures. In my culture career choices were limited, and I chose dentistry. It wasn’t my dream, but it was a safe bet, and I didn’t want to follow in my mother’s footsteps as a doctor on call 24/7.
After dental school, I worked nine jobs in New York before finally finding my niche in endodontics in Florida. I then went on to launch my own practice during the 2008 recession. And just like that, life accelerated into marriage and motherhood soon after.
While my twenties were about fun, my thirties were a blur of hustle. I was just moving through life checking the boxes for “success”, without ever asking myself why I was doing any of it.
Transforming Burnout into Growth
My healing wasn’t just physical, it was spiritual. As I worked through burnout, I rebuilt my marriage, my professional life, and most importantly, my sense of self. It was hard, but beautiful.
When E-School launched in 2019, I had no idea how timely it would be. As COVID hit and pushed everything online, I was already ahead of the curve, operating in the digital space. Trusting my gut had paid off in ways I could never have imagined.
The most significant transformation, though, happened internally. I stopped living by external expectations and started following my own sense of purpose.
Preventing Future Burnout: Daily Practices
Today, I maintain my well-being through daily habits that keep burnout at bay:
- I make self-reflection a priority, always asking myself: Why am I doing this?
- I set firm boundaries between work and personal life.
- I invest in activities that replenish my energy.
- I surround myself with people who support my authentic growth.
- I realign my work with my deeper purpose regularly.
These aren’t just wellness buzzwords, they’re the foundation that keeps burnout from creeping back in.
