From Burnout to Balance: How Mindful Leadership Can Save Your Practice—and Your Peace
Welcome back to University of Why, the podcast where we explore what drives us so we can redefine success on our own terms. I’m your host, Dr. Sonia Chopra—board-certified endodontist, educator, mom of three, and recovering overachiever—and today’s episode is one every dentist needs to hear.
We’re talking about preventing burnout in dentistry, a conversation that’s long overdue in our profession. My guest, Dr. Josie Dovidio, also known as @yogafordentists, brings over 30 years of experience in clinical dentistry and wellness leadership. She’s a certified yoga instructor, wellness consultant, and founder of Crown of Wellness, a program designed specifically to help dentists regulate their nervous systems, shift their mindsets, and finally find peace in their practices again.
This conversation is deep, raw, and full of wisdom. Let’s dive in.

From Burnout to Breakthrough: Josie’s Journey
When Josie graduated from dental school in 1997, she was living the dream. Or so it looked from the outside.
She had built a thriving practice, was a respected clinician, and checked every box of “success.” But inside? She was breaking. Chronic stress, sleepless nights, and a constant fight-or-flight state left her physically and emotionally drained. Hair loss, anxiety, and insomnia became daily companions.
In 2019, she sold her practice—not out of triumph, but out of survival. “I sold it from a place of despair,” she told me. “I don’t recommend that.”
That moment of surrender became the beginning of her rebirth.
Discovering Healing Through Yoga and Mindfulness
After selling her practice, Josie threw herself into healing—doctor visits, acupuncture, therapy, supplements—you name it. But it wasn’t until she revisited her love for yoga that things began to shift.
What started as curiosity (“Why do I feel so good when I do yoga?”) became a full-fledged calling. She enrolled in yoga teacher training, not to teach, but to understand. Fast-forward: she’s now a 500-hour certified yoga instructor and founder of Yoga for Dentists—a global community focused on mindfulness, nervous system regulation, and holistic leadership in dentistry.
“I realized no one ever taught us how to manage our stress as providers,” she said. “We learned the autonomic nervous system in dental school—but never how to use that knowledge to help ourselves.”
The Root Cause of Dentist Burnout
The truth Josie and I both know all too well: burnout in dentistry isn’t just about workload. It’s about misalignment.
Dentists are trained to push through discomfort, to serve everyone else first. But as Josie explained, “You can’t heal from a dysregulated state. You can’t serve your patients when your own nervous system is in chaos. ”Many dentists stay stuck in a survival loop—fight, flight, freeze, or fawn—never realizing that their exhaustion isn’t laziness or lack of grit. It’s biology. Your body is waving a flag that says: I need a reset.

Mindful Leadership: The Antidote to Overwhelm
What I love about Josie’s approach is that it’s practical. She doesn’t preach bubble baths and candles as burnout cures. She teaches real, actionable tools to rewire your nervous system, one small step at a time.
“If everything is important, nothing is important,” she said. “We have to zoom out and get clear about what really matters.”
Through her Mindful Leadership for Dentists program, Josie helps practitioners:
- Recognize the signs of dysregulation
- Use breathwork and body awareness to calm the mind
- Build leadership presence through empathy and clarity
- Set boundaries that protect peace
- Shift from reaction to response in both practice and home life
And she emphasizes: change doesn’t require a full life overhaul. “It starts with a small, consistent practice. Ten minutes of stillness a day can change everything.”
The Power of Awareness, Reflection, and Rest
During our conversation, we reflected on how stillness unlocks clarity. I shared how even ten quiet minutes in the morning—with a space heater and my thoughts—became a ritual that changed my relationship with time.
Josie put it beautifully: “Stillness is how you plug yourself back in. It’s how you recharge your battery.”
This isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s about taking a moment to breathe before reacting, about leading your team with grace instead of reactivity, and about remembering that you are your greatest investment.
A Final Reflection: You Can’t Pour from an Empty Cup
Dentistry will always have stress. But your nervous system doesn’t have to live there.
If you’re feeling stuck, overextended, or disconnected from the work you once loved, maybe it’s time to turn inward. Burnout isn’t a failure, it’s a message. And when you learn to listen, healing begins.
