Finding Purpose Through Pain: How My Tooth Story Shaped My Career

Welcome back to University of Why, the podcast that helps you ask the big questions—so you can reconnect with your purpose and design a life you love.
This episode? It’s a deeply personal one.
Because sometimes, the biggest moments in life begin with the smallest signals. In my case, a toothache.
I’m Dr. Sonia Chopra, and today I’m sharing how my own tooth story—a literal toothache!—unexpectedly paved the way to a career I never originally planned, ultimately helping me uncover my true calling.
We talk about:
- Navigating a career path that wasn’t originally yours
- How trauma can hold hidden direction
- Why burnout can be a doorway, not a dead end
- And how listening to your body might just be your best career coach
Before I fully understood the purpose behind my work, I had to take a hard look at where I was investing my energy. And spoiler alert: one category towered above the rest…

My Career Bucket: The Biggest One of All
Back in 2019, I did a program called Lifebook, where you evaluate 12 areas of your life. For me, the “career” spoke on my wheel of life was the one that carried the most weight.
That wheel included:
- Health & Fitness
- Intellectual
- Emotional life
- Character
- Spirituality
- Love Relationship
- Parenting
- Social Life
- Financial Life
- Career
- Quality of Life
- Life Vision…
…and more. But career? That wedge dominated. And not just because of what I do for work, but because of how much it’s taught me about who I am.
But to fully understand why my career shaped me so profoundly, we have to look a little further back.
The Toothache that Set My Life in Motion
Let me rewind to the summer of 1995. I was about to go to college when I developed a vague tooth pain that shortly turned into full-blown agony.
No dentist could give me an answer. Specialist after specialist, and no one knew what was wrong. Eventually I had a tooth pulled, and even after the extraction, I was still in pain. I said goodbye to a perfectly healthy tooth, and my problem persisted.
Finally, I ended up in the chair of an endodontist. He had a calming surfer dude vibe, a ponytail (yes, really), and a way of talking that finally made sense to me. He listened. He diagnosed me. And he got me out of pain.
That moment changed me.
That endodontist showed me what real healing looks like. And I thought to myself: I want to be like him.
Years later, I carried that passion into my own practice, determined to make a difference. But the reality wasn’t quite what I expected.

Burnout, Frustration, and the Energy of Healing
After opening my own practice in 2008, I hit a wall.
Patients were still being misdiagnosed. Still being bounced from provider to provider. Just like I had been.
I felt frustrated. Burned out. Energetically drained.
And that was my clue: dentistry is more than physical work. It’s an energetic profession. Every day, I was absorbing my patients’ fears, doubts, pain, and trauma.
And I wasn’t taught how to manage any of it.
But that realization prompted me to look deeper—not just into my practice, but into every facet of my life. I began to see clearly how each area was interconnected, each requiring attention, intention, and boundaries of its own.
Understanding my Sacred Containers: Career, Motherhood, and Marriage
The three containers of life that have taught me the most are:
- My practice
- My marriage
- Motherhood
Each of them has demanded more from me than I thought I had. Each of them cracked me open and rebuilt me. Each of them asked me to become a better version of myself.
As I recalibrated my energy across these containers, I started to envision new ways to expand my purpose beyond the dental chair.
Side Hustle or Soul Work? Creating E-School
After years of burnout, I realized: I can’t do this five days a week.
I began scaling back. One day off per child. Eventually, I was down to two clinical days a week. But my brain still wanted something more.
At the same time, I started teaching. At first, it was local. I volunteered for 13 years at the dental residency in a nearby hospital.
Then I created a course. An online course all about how to do better root canals. And I called it E-School: Everyday Endo Made Easy.
It came pouring out of me like water. I was in flow. But then? I hit a new wall: imposter syndrome.
I didn’t look like the other educators. I was young, brown, and often mistaken for the assistant. What was I doing creating an endodontics course?
But I launched anyway.
And when I did, something clicked into place. All the confusion and doubt crystallized into one clear vision: my Ikigai.
What is Ikigai?
Ikigai is a Japanese concept that asks:
- What do you love?
- What are you good at?
- What does the world need?
- And what can you get paid for?
My ikigai became clear:
- I love healing people.
- I’m good at root canals.
- The world needs better dental education.
- And yes, I can get paid to teach.
Boom. Alignment.
